Unit labor costs in the US nonfarm business sector declined by 0.8% in the third quarter of 2023, following an upwardly revised 3.2% increase in the previous three-month period and missing market expectations of a 0.7% rise, a preliminary estimate showed. It marked the first quarterly decline in labor costs since the fourth quarter of 2022, as hourly compensation increased by 3.9% and productivity advanced by 4.7%. Year-on-year, unit labor costs increased by 1.9% in the third quarter, the weakest pace of growth since the second quarter of 2021.
