The annual urban inflation rate in Egypt cooled down to 14.9% in June 2025 from 16.8% in May, coming in below the expected 16.2% and breaking a three-month uptrend. Prices for food and beverages decelerated to 6.9% in June from 11.2% in May, though fuel costs remained elevated due to April's energy price hikes of up to 15%. Meanwhile, Egypt’s parliament has approved a series of changes to the value-added tax (VAT) law in late June, which could lead to a rise in the prices of goods such as cigarettes, alcoholic beverages and crude oil. On a monthly basis, the CPI edged down by 0.1% in June, marking the first deflationary reading since May 2024, driven by a 1.2% drop in food and beverage prices. Notably, meat and poultry fell 3.8%, fruits declined 2.1%, and vegetables were down 1.0%.
