The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas' general business activity index for manufacturing in Texas rose to -9.7 in August of 2024 from -17.5 in the previous month, marking the lowest contraction level since January 2023. Production grew from the previous month (1.6 vs -1.3 in July), while the new orders index climbed nine points (-4.2 vs -12.8), and the capacity utilization index pushed up eight points to (-2.5 vs -10), yet remained in negative territory. On the other hand, the shipments index came in near zero, rebounding from last month (0.8 vs -16.3). In the meantime, wages continued to grow (22 vs 21.2), while the employment index slipped to near-zero reading (-0.7 vs 7.1), indicating no change in employment levels from July when the index spiked to a 10-month high. On the price front, raw material costs accelerated (28.2 vs 23.1), resulting in an increase in prices charged (8.5 vs 3.4).
